Yesterday we went to the Haghia Sofia, now a museum since the early 20th century but a byzantine Church since the 6th century built by Emperor Justinian of the eastern Holy Roman Empire. He hired two mathematicians to plan the architecture and when he went to open it he is supposed to have said,"Solomon, I have surpassed thee." In 1453 Sultan Mehmet at the age of 22 conquered Constantinople and converted the Church of the Divine Wisdom as the Haghia Sofia was known into a Mosque. Check out the fusion Byzantine Christianity and the Muslim faith in this grand basilica.
